Volunteers search Baldwin County beaches for traces of oil spill

Armed with handheld GPS units and digital cameras, volunteers conducted morning sweeps of Baldwin County's beaches this week.

Organizers designed the excursions -- direction from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m., with volunteers meeting on the Gulf Shores flagrant beach near The Hangout and fanning out along the coastline -- to relate to contaminated patches of beach and alert cleanup crews before beachgoers gang to the white sands.

"The major goal is to keep the beaches unblock for as long as we can," said Mobile Baykeeper Executive The man Casi Callaway.

The morning sweeps began Tuesday as a dive effort of Mobile Baykeeper, Alabama Coastal Inauguration, HandsOn South Alabama, the governor's office of confidence-based and community initiatives and a handful of other groups.

Wednesday's destroy was especially helpful, said HandsOn South Alabama Gubernatorial Director Diana Brinson, but it was unclear when the next one will happen.
